What Are the Basic Principles of Feng Shui

The philosophy of feng shui is a practice looking at our built environments and how to live in harmony with the principles of the natural world. Feng means “wind” and shui translates to “water” in Chinese. This comes from an ancient poem and reflects upon how human life can be ideal if we connect and live in flow with the environment around us.

In Asian cultures, this is called the Tao, which translates to “the way”. The Tao is the way of nature. Hence, the basic principles of feng shui come from observations of nature. The most important principles are the commanding position, the bagua, and the five elements. .........Read More

The bagua

Feng shui bagua (also called ba-gua or pakua) is one of the main tools used in feng shui to analyze the energy of any given space, be it home, office or garden. Basically, bagua is the feng shui energy map of your space that shows you which areas of your home or office are connected to specific areas of your life.

Translated from Chinese, Bagua literally means "8 areas."

It is important to understand that there are two different ways, or schools used to define the bagua of any space.

There is the Classical, or Traditional feng shui school bagua, and then there is the BTB, or Western feng shui school bagua. It is best not to apply both at the same time.

Once you have the compass reading and the floor plan of your space, you can easily define the bagua. This will show you the location of different feng shui areas in your home or office. Each of the 8 feng shui areas, or directions, has a specific feng shui element, feng shui color, as well as life area connected to it.
